Namibia weather ranges from arid and semi-arid to subtropical, although it’s considered to be generally dry. As a matter of fact, weather in Namibia is the driest in the African continent, retaining its pleasant attributes through out the weather, making the country a haven for overseas visitors. In comparison to other countries further towards its east, Namibia’s annual rainfall is considerably lower, making it a land of perennial drought, with some of its regions not seeing a drop of rain for almost a century.

Often humid spells are followed by localised, afternoon thunderstorms especially between December to March, and more commonly in the centre and east of the country, only infrequently denting the dryness of the desert.

During the months of April and especially May the landscape comes to live, as Namibia weather becomes increasingly dry. A real sense of freshness hangs in the largely dust-free and clear air, the horizon covered in a colourful floral carpet within a few days.

Namibia weather cools down considerably between June to August, the nights becoming colder even dropping bellow freezing point in some desert areas. The weather warms up again in September, the fine days continuing through to October, the downside being the presence of dust in the air. November in Namibia is a highly variable time. The mostly hot and dry weather continues to dominate often intercepted by the appearance of dark clouds in the sky and the threat of a possible downpour. Summer in Namibia lasts between October to April, with temperatures reaching often reaching a sizzling 40º C, plummeting considerably during the nights.

The Coast

In sharp contrast to Namibia weather in the interior which is usually considered a paradise for sun-worshippers, the coastal areas are decisively cooler and overcast, a product of a cold off-shore Atlantic current and the very hot Namib Desert. Temperatures in the coastal region generally range between 5° C and 20°C, although in winter searing heat rears its ugly head over the region, thanks to the influence of the east wind. These spells of scorching heat are often accompanied by dust storms, thus the coastal region perversely experience its hottest days during the winter break.

The Interior

Ask visitors what is the one thing they expect when booking their trips to Namibia, and undoubtedly you will receive the same answer: sunshine! The interior region of Namibia not offers that, it also offers it in abundance. Although Namibia weather is characterized by the large number of sunshine-filled days – registering an amazing 300 per year – and despite the fact that overcast days are something of a novelty, winter temperatures in central & southern Namibia can drop to below freezing. Having said that it’s also worth mentioning that during the winter months temperatures remain around 5° C.

Understandably, summer in the interior is a many splendor thing, with warm and pleasant evenings when temperatures remain in the high teens, although during the day they can soar all the way up to low 40's.

The rain season in the northern part of the interior commences in October and lasts all the way through the first weeks of May. Rainfall averages decrease the further south one heads, and the same goes when traveling from east to west.
