Namibia weather is typical of the semi-desert area where the country is situated. Partially covered by the Namib Desert, Namibia weather is considered to be the driest in Africa, with characteristically sunny, warm days and cooler nights. Rain in Namibia is rather scarce, and falls mainly during the summer season. On the other hand, sunshine is abundant; weather in Namibia is blessed with over 300 sunny days a year making the country a fine place to visit at any given time of the year.
During summer, Namibia’s coast experiences averages temperatures of 23° C (73° F) which drops to a significantly cooler 13° C (55° F ) during winter. Thanks to the influence of the cold Benguela current, the coastal areas often experience fog and somewhat restrained rainfalls. The higher elevated central plateau regions experience lower temperatures.
Because of its desert location, most parts of Namibia experience permanent drought. Although rainfall is inadequate to say the least, for the largest part of the country, in some areas is even more pronounced; nearly a century has passed without a single drop of rain falling on their barren land. Most of the rain falls in the November–March period. Annual rainfall generally averages more than 70 cm (28 in) in the far north, 2.5– 15 cm (1–6 in) in the south, and 35 cm (14 in) in the central plateau. During the same period humid days are occasionally followed by afternoon downpours. Between October and April – Namibia’s summer season – temperatures soar to a sizzling 40º C, dropping to significantly cooler conditions during the night.
Although Namibia weather is predominantly fine throughout the year, it’s at its most pleasant and lovely during April and especially May. The atmosphere becomes increasingly dry and a real freshness permanently lingers on in the clear and free of dust air.
Weather in Namibia cools down as June rolls in, remaining so all the way through to August. On the downside, conditions also tend to dry up even more. Running between May and September, Namibia’s winter season is characterized by the marked difference between daytime and night time temperatures: with temperatures often plummeting bellow freezing, nights are in sharp contrast to the day’s predominantly warm conditions.
By September temperatures begin their steady ascent, the weather becoming prone to sudden changes during November; occasionally the month is typified by hot and dry conditions, and on other occasions clouds begin to form in the sky, and the first rainfalls of the season are evident.
